Documentary types

Expository - style of it. Original and archive footage. Crew are not seen by the audience. Use voice over. Try not to stage anything. Example of this is Natural History Programmes. Programme BBC planet earth.

Observational - Record in their natural environment. Aim is for a greater degree of naturalness. Try not to stage things but edited a lot. Still not seeing the crew or cameras. Example of this is Etre et Avoir. An example is Anvil the story of Anvil.

Fly-on-the-wall - Blend into the background. long form and over a long period of time for example six months. Trying to give the audience unmediated access to the world. Example is The Family

Interactive/Reflexive - Filmmaker is a cast in the film and want reactions from the audience. The film maker might not take sides on what they are filming but might give you their own view on what they are filming depending on what it is about. An example of this is Roger and me and Biggie and Tupac. Another example is Louis Theroux american Wrestling.

Poetic/avant garde - In this instance the emphasis is on creativity as the filmmaker explores, For example Night mail and Lido.

Drama documentary - Absence of archive material or access to witnesses, filmmaker might stage a dramatic reconstruction of events. Examples of this are who bombed Birmingham? and Hillsborough.

Mockumentary - fictional films which parody the forms and conventions of documentary often for humorous effect. Examples of this are this is Spinal tap, Best in Show, Blair witch project and The Office.

Personal - 'Films' are often shot on video and generally feature the maker addressing the camera directly, expounding or sharing his or her views with the viewer. An example of this is Video Nation.

Music Videos in the class

Sam and Tom's music video - English rose
The Singing was linked well and it did look like he was singing it.
I liked the fades however they kept over lapping which made it hard to know what shot you are looking.

David's music video - 500 Miles
I like the idea of someone walking around.
The only problems that were looking at the camera and editing. the shots went on for too long

Nathan's music video - On my way
Like the idea and the links with the singing.
I liked his movement and following but moving the camera with hand made it look a little jumpy

Joe's music video - I love it
everything was amazing. I love the idea of having text over lapping shots
The lighting was good because it played a big part of the theme of a party/ club

Briana's music video - Higher love
Love the use of the lights and sunrise/sunset.
Like the use of the lyrics and the meaning which was the video

James and Dan's music video - I'd do anything
Loved the editing and the idea of the video however way too cheesy and over acting people.

Becky, Harrison and Freddey - Clarity

Awesome. Love how you just take different scenes from different places and days.

For the next video I will take ideas from Joe's video with the text over lapping.
Idea from using the sun and lights around to light the video and make the video about the lyrics.
I still liked the idea of the slow motion that we used and fast motion.
I think our music video is at the same style and editing

Our Music Video

The ACE company cover of the Harlem Shake

For this music video project there were some problems that we faced and other things that we worked well at together. In my group was me, Alice and Emily. Our first idea for our music video was about two people who are in love and they go to a night club to get closer together however the people at the club keep pulling them apart. This video was for the song rhythm of the night by Bastille. The pre production for this was something that we all worked well with. It took a week to get it all done. The story boarding, risk assessments, forms ect. However when it came to filming we had a problem, it was a lot harder than we thought to get the idea what we had across to the audience so we quickly had to change the idea and the song within a week. It was when changed to herlm shake and the idea was to do a group of mates that are hanging out together at this yogot shop and the song starts. The group start dancing to the song and are having fun. After the song ends the group of mates leave. We found that some of the first lot of filming went well with the last lot and we linked them together to give the effect more people were there and dancing along to the song. We all brain stormed about the idea of the video and we all took part in the editing. On the first day we all took turns in controlling the camera same with the second day. With the pre production I did story boarding for the first idea then helped sorry boarding with the second idea. The treatment and proposal we all worked with together. We took our pre production work for the firs idea and just took out the main points and replaced them with points that matched our new idea. The things that could be improved are the planning of the idea and making sure we have done film testing so that if it doesn't work out again we have enough time to work things out and make a new idea with time to editing more then the little time we had left.

After editing - essay

Things that went well and were done right

  • Story board
  • Ideas
  • Equipment booking and use
  • All pre production paper work, For example risk assessment, cast paper work.

A good thing about our group was that:

Didn't take long to pick a song out of the three which we picked one each then to come up with an idea for the video which matches the song.

Probs needed

Touches - different colour lights
Glow sticks - about 3 packs to make sure we have enough to cover 3 to 5 people
Sign for the opening for the club. on the door to show where to enter
