Documentary types

Expository - style of it. Original and archive footage. Crew are not seen by the audience. Use voice over. Try not to stage anything. Example of this is Natural History Programmes. Programme BBC planet earth.



Observational - Record in their natural environment. Aim is for a greater degree of naturalness. Try not to stage things but edited a lot. Still not seeing the crew or cameras. Example of this is Etre et Avoir. An example is Anvil the story of Anvil.


Fly-on-the-wall - Blend into the background. long form and over a long period of time for example six months. Trying to give the audience unmediated access to the world. Example is The Family


Interactive/Reflexive - Filmmaker is a cast in the film and want reactions from the audience. The film maker might not take sides on what they are filming but might give you their own view on what they are filming depending on what it is about. An example of this is Roger and me and Biggie and Tupac. Another example is Louis Theroux american Wrestling.

Poetic/avant garde - In this instance the emphasis is on creativity as the filmmaker explores, For example Night mail and Lido.


Drama documentary - Absence of archive material or access to witnesses, filmmaker might stage a dramatic reconstruction of events. Examples of this are who bombed Birmingham? and Hillsborough.


Mockumentary - fictional films which parody the forms and conventions of documentary often for humorous effect. Examples of this are this is Spinal tap, Best in Show, Blair witch project and The Office.


Personal - 'Films' are often shot on video and generally feature the maker addressing the camera directly, expounding or sharing his or her views with the viewer. An example of this is Video Nation.
