news and documentaries

Nearly every documentary has the same list of conventions, for example in documentaries, depending on what they are about, will have interviews with witness or victims of the event that has taken place also clips of interviews with special topic people. Its very typical of documentaries to add in clips of over footage that cover the same subject. For example the Outfoxed documentary used clips from previous Fox news stories to show the documentaries message across to their audience that fox news are making up news stories. Documentaries that have a very big and important message world wide tend to include celebrities and important figures in the public eye. In the 'Bowling for Columbine' the reporter went to an old Hollywood star who was a member od the LA guns club. The clip was of the reporter telling the star about a six year old boy who went into school one day with a gun and shot a six year old girl in his class which ended up with the young girl dying. Documentaries tend to use voice overs which are used to tell the audience what is going to happen also it can be used to give some extra facts or information that the reporter has missed out. Its not typical of documentaries to use VT inserts but some do for example the Black Fish put in VT's of past whale shows and past trainers talking about working there. Documentaries use music in the same way as most films do. They pick their music carefully to get an emotion across to the audience and want them to have a reaction to what they are seeing compared to what they are hearing. In Bowling for Columbine the opening is of clips about the wars and killing in America however they had what a wonderful world playing over it to give you a different emotion to what you see and to what you hear. In the same opening they use a montage which was fast pace to show how long America has had a history or war and use of weapons.  Documentaries are most famous for hand held and archive footage. This is was separates documentary from TV shows and other types of media. Most documentaries focus on one subject but give different  solutions on how to correct it. In the bowling or Columbine they take the law into their own hands which is a typical thing for documentaries that focus on political subjects. Every documentary has a tone, sarcastic that include for shadowing Irony, sarcasm, black humour 'about death'. For extra footage some documentaries use CCTV footage and amateur footage that normally are added with statistics

The good use of Multi-camera is that you can edit by using the different camera shots with the different angles covering the same piece of footage. For example in Louis met the Nazi they used multi-camera edit for the conversation between him and the mother of the two young girls. They edited between three cameras, one focused on him and the other on the mother and one that kept flicking between the two of the girls themselves playing. One of the problems with Multi-camera use is they need an more complex lighting set up to give each angle the same lighting effect and colour balance.
The use of single camera makes it lot harder to use because you have no extra footage, all you have is what you capture on that camera and unless you can go back to film it again, you cant cover things such as live news or live events.

Blowing for Columbine - The step by step set up for the documentary.

1- gun availability + views of gun ownership
    2- fear + safety
3- inequality between rich + poor in USA
    4- killing of Columbine students
5- about American society + socialisation
    6- importance of the media

    Killing of students in school
fact - Students did a shooting at a school
opinion - Local people in the town and gun owners
    bias
    propaganda

Louie met the Nazi - Documentary

The documentary was Louie following and living with the American Nazi community. He followed the leader tom and questioned his beliefs and ways.
He also met a mother of two little girls and got to see how she was bringing up her children. We saw how what they sing about and how they played. We learned that they have to hide their beliefs from friends because their mother doesn't want them to lose friends over what she has brought them up to believe in.

    The Bias in News

Bias - Selecting which story will go forward.

Placement- what place that story is put. If its put at the start or end of the news. which one is the most important
Bias by headline - What words are used and if they are in capital letter or not. By word choice and tone.
bias by photos, the camera angle,  photoshop.
    Bias through names and titles
    language
    facts
    interviews
Source control - where the source is coming from.  Bias story
Obese pregnant woman are the NHS problems. ........ Fat people are the problem of the NHS. Underweight people are also the NHS. The video shows normal weight pregnant women who are being called obese.

In the documentary 'Outfoxed'  they used bias a lot by having a group of guess that 3 of them that believe the same political views and one guess that believes the other side of political views. The documentary shows the famous American news show as a one sided news show that only has guess from one sided political parties and only presents news that will help their parties be picked. They also share their racial views and put them into news to give them reasons and back up facts about why they believe that and why it is right. They have a tagline 'balance and fair' which becomes irony in this documentary because what they are showing up is them not being balance and fair just them being one sides and lairs.

Oprah Winfrey, the most powerful and successful woman in the world. Picked by billboard in the years 2013-2014. She has been working since 1983 and is still going strong. She started the Oprah Winfrey show in 1986 and sadly ended in 2011 but that willn't stop the goddess of hollywood. The conventions for news are very important for the audience to understand that it is a new show and to give the same effect, to provide the audience with the information they are looking for.

What are the conventions of TV news
    interviews
    presenter
    opening title
studio  someone talking to us then making links to a reporter out on location
    different locations
    moving images

                - sport and weather

breakfast news sitting on a sofa and a man and woman talk about the story and give opinions on that story. more relatable and comfortable. This is shown in ITV1' This Morning show where they have two relatable hosts that present local news and up coming events. The presenters are formally dressed however because they are not sat behind a desk unlike BBC News it gives a more approachable feel than BBC News. More formal news like BBC News is very to the point and the presenters are there to give you, the audience, the information you are looking for. Its very unlikely the presenters will break the script and talk about their opinions on the matters at hand. Some of the audience for this type of news programme will just watch it for the information to be given in a short amount of time and they wouldn't want to hear the presenters opinions. All types of news programmes use  Multi-camera, like some documentaries, however its for different reasons. News programmes use multi-camera because of the set up of the studios. One camera would be fixed on the main presenters and won't move through the whole show, another camera will be on the weather man and another would be fixed on a reporter with a guest if they are in the studio. They use multi-camera because news shows are live and they wouldn't have the time to keep moving around one camera and get it focused again on the new image. The use of the camera's also helps the editing, Due to news being live the editing must be done live as well and if they use multi-camera the editor can move back and forth between cameras to make it more effect to the audience which will hold their attention for longer amounts of time. Also if one camera needs to change its focus or white balances or something goes wrong with it then the editor has two or more other cameras he can use to cover up the other camera changing. If its done in the right way the audience will not notice this happening and just think they changed the camera because something else in going to happen or someone else is going to talk other than the main presenters.
