Expository - style of it. Original and archive footage. Crew are not seen by the audience. Use voice over. Try not to stage anything. Example of this is Natural History Programmes. Programme BBC planet earth.
Observational - Record in their natural environment. Aim is for a greater degree of naturalness. Try not to stage things but edited a lot. Still not seeing the crew or cameras. Example of this is Etre et Avoir. An example is Anvil the story of Anvil.
Fly-on-the-wall - Blend into the background. long form and over a long period of time for example six months. Trying to give the audience unmediated access to the world. Example is The Family
Interactive/Reflexive - Filmmaker is a cast in the film and want reactions from the audience. The film maker might not take sides on what they are filming but might give you their own view on what they are filming depending on what it is about. An example of this is Roger and me and Biggie and Tupac. Another example is Louis Theroux american Wrestling.
Poetic/avant garde - In this instance the emphasis is on creativity as the filmmaker explores, For example Night mail and Lido.
Drama documentary - Absence of archive material or access to witnesses, filmmaker might stage a dramatic reconstruction of events. Examples of this are who bombed Birmingham? and Hillsborough.
Mockumentary - fictional films which parody the forms and conventions of documentary often for humorous effect. Examples of this are this is Spinal tap, Best in Show, Blair witch project and The Office.
Personal - 'Films' are often shot on video and generally feature the maker addressing the camera directly, expounding or sharing his or her views with the viewer. An example of this is Video Nation.

Music Videos in the class
Sam and Tom's music video - English rose
The Singing was linked well and it did look like he was singing it.
I liked the fades however they kept over lapping which made it hard to know what shot you are looking.
David's music video - 500 Miles
I like the idea of someone walking around.
The only problems that were looking at the camera and editing. the shots went on for too long
Nathan's music video - On my way
Like the idea and the links with the singing.
I liked his movement and following but moving the camera with hand made it look a little jumpy
Joe's music video - I love it
everything was amazing. I love the idea of having text over lapping shots
The lighting was good because it played a big part of the theme of a party/ club
Briana's music video - Higher love
Love the use of the lights and sunrise/sunset.
Like the use of the lyrics and the meaning which was the video
James and Dan's music video - I'd do anything
Loved the editing and the idea of the video however way too cheesy and over acting people.
Becky, Harrison and Freddey - Clarity
Awesome. Love how you just take different scenes from different places and days.
For the next video I will take ideas from Joe's video with the text over lapping.
Idea from using the sun and lights around to light the video and make the video about the lyrics.
I still liked the idea of the slow motion that we used and fast motion.
I think our music video is at the same style and editing

Our Music Video
The ACE company cover of the Harlem Shake
For this music video project there were some problems that we faced and other things that we worked well at together. In my group was me, Alice and Emily. Our first idea for our music video was about two people who are in love and they go to a night club to get closer together however the people at the club keep pulling them apart. This video was for the song rhythm of the night by Bastille. The pre production for this was something that we all worked well with. It took a week to get it all done. The story boarding, risk assessments, forms ect. However when it came to filming we had a problem, it was a lot harder than we thought to get the idea what we had across to the audience so we quickly had to change the idea and the song within a week. It was when changed to herlm shake and the idea was to do a group of mates that are hanging out together at this yogot shop and the song starts. The group start dancing to the song and are having fun. After the song ends the group of mates leave. We found that some of the first lot of filming went well with the last lot and we linked them together to give the effect more people were there and dancing along to the song. We all brain stormed about the idea of the video and we all took part in the editing. On the first day we all took turns in controlling the camera same with the second day. With the pre production I did story boarding for the first idea then helped sorry boarding with the second idea. The treatment and proposal we all worked with together. We took our pre production work for the firs idea and just took out the main points and replaced them with points that matched our new idea. The things that could be improved are the planning of the idea and making sure we have done film testing so that if it doesn't work out again we have enough time to work things out and make a new idea with time to editing more then the little time we had left.

After editing - essay
Things that went well and were done right
- Story board
- Ideas
- Equipment booking and use
- All pre production paper work, For example risk assessment, cast paper work.
A good thing about our group was that:
Didn't take long to pick a song out of the three which we picked one each then to come up with an idea for the video which matches the song.
Probs needed
Touches - different colour lights
Glow sticks - about 3 packs to make sure we have enough to cover 3 to 5 people

Music Video - Pre Production
Music Video: Harlem Shake - Beeur
Jobs Roles:
Emily: Producer
Charlie: Director
Alice: Camera
The three of us are editors.
Songs:
Emily: Producer
Charlie: Director
Alice: Camera
The three of us are editors.
Songs:
- We each came up with a song choice and discussed with each other and the class those ideas.
- Emily's song choice was Red by Daniel Merriweather and my idea for it was going to be about a man getting cheated on by his girlfriend.
- My idea was We Speak no Americano and it was going to be two gangs that street dancing against each other.
- Finally Alice's choice and the one we have chosen to do our music video on is the Harlem Shake. This is off a group of mates just hanging out and having fun.
Initial
ideas:
We had
several different ideas for our music video. Each of us choose a different song
that we wanted to do, the three songs that we choose were Bastille - Rhythm Of
the night, Daniel Merriweather - Red and Yoloanda - We speak no Americano. We all came up with our own ideas for our own
songs which we then discussed each of the videos ideas with each other and the
class. The class then picked which song they thought would be the best to
record. The end result ended up being Rhythm of the night.
Production Schedule
Shooting Schedule
Location:
We are going to shoot our music video at around
about 5:00pm at Sweet Frog. We
have sent an email to the manger of Sweet Frog to ask permission to
shoot here and they have agreed to let us do this.
Setting up:
We will start setting our music video up at 5:00.
It should roughly take us an hour to get everything set properly. Each scene

Proposal: Brief Description
In our Music video we will be filming lots of
people dancing when the Harlem Shake kicks in. This is a video summing up what its like to be out with your mates at a teen.
Treatment
Out of the 3 songs that we choose, we decided to do Herlem Shake by Beeur. The story that we are going to create is a group of mates just having fun and hanging out together.
We will have loads of different dancers. On the
first day that we begin to film which will be 6th of December at 5:30pm. This will
consist of the group of mates hanging out before the music kicks in which mean we are filming the beginning and ending
of our music video. The group of mates will be laughing and joking around then someone turns on the radio and the herlem shake.
On The 9th of December we will film the rest of the
video. This will consist of loads of different dancers and them just having fun with each other hanging out at Sweet frog.
After we filmed everything we need, we will then
begin to edit or footage and if any parts are missing will have enough time to
re-film it and still edit it before its due in.
Contingency
We plan
to finish our music video by 9th December. We will make sure we check all the footage
after filming to make sure that it is all there. We will film more than we need,
so if things go wrong we will have more footage to use incase. We will have a
back up idea incase our original idea fails. We must make sure we have spare
batteries.

Idea for new music video
The Rhythm of the Night
by Bastille
For our new music video we are doing 'The Rhythm of the Night' by Bastille
by Bastille
For our new music video we are doing 'The Rhythm of the Night' by Bastille
Our idea for the video is of two people who are in love and want to meet at club. However everyone keeps getting in the way of them being together because of the amount of people dancing to the song and just having fun the couple cant be together due to the music and people around them.
The video starts of with the boy calling the girl to see if she wants to meet up at this new club that has just open. She agrees to meet and the video follows their journey to the club. When they get to the club they walk in and the song has just started playing then all the lights go out.
The people dancing have glow in the dark paint on them so we can see outlines of people dancing around. Most of the video is shots of people dancing and having fun listening to this song.
At the end of the music video we have another screen where the couple finally meet again outside the club and kiss.
We are filming at night to give all effect of a club screen.
Shooting schedule for new music video
Shooting schedule
location:
at Sweet Frog at 7:00pm
Time setting up: 7:00pm
Start filming: 7:30pm
Pack up time: 10:00pm
Each scene should take 40 mins.
First Day
Start at: 5:00
Only film the start of the music video and the end. No dancing will be filmed that day.
First day will only be filmed using one camera
Second Day

History of Film
Sergei Eisenstein
Sergei Eisenstein was born in Russia in 1894 and died in Russia, Moscow in 1948. He use to be a set designer and director but then later when on to be a film maker, writer, producer and editor.
His very important to film because of his creations of his montages.
He done the montage of attraction which is lots of different clips shot in a order and when it came to editing them he put them into a different order to create a different emotion when viewing them clips again. This was something that had never been done before. By doing this the audience viewing his films were left in a different state of mind and every single person was left with a different emotion on the same thing they viewed. he loved to heavily edit his films to create emotions for different audiences.
D . W . Griffith
Daivd Llewelyn Wark was born in the United states in 1875 and died in the United states in 1948.
His is viewed differently because of his racist views.
His most famous film was called 'The Birth of a Nation' shows his views about race and it was over 3 hours long. He is known for creating film techniques such as iris and flashbacks. He was called Hollywoods first proper director.
Georges Melies
He was born in France in 1861 and died in France in 1938.
He wanted to make things possible on screen which couldn't be possible to the naked eye. By the late 20's he had done over 500 films. He also created the stop trick which was when he stopped the camera from rolling, changed or moved something and then roll the camera again. For example a man in the shot then a woman takes his place.
Lumiere Brothers
The Lumiere brothers were French inverters and they used that to create the first public screening which was on December 28th 1895. They created the 'Cine Camera' and made over 1425 short films and their most famous film was the 'Arrival of train'.

Sea world Promo made my me
Final cut pro
Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning how to use Final cut pro. The things i have learned are how to cut a clip and make it shorter or keep it as the original clip. Also learned how to insert clips or overwrite them also i have learned the shortcuts by the keyboard that are in over posts.
After learning how to use Final Cut Pro and understanding it we made a promo video for Sea World using all the effects and tools that we have learned within these weeks.
Here is my video i made for SeaWorld.
music video director essay
Stephane Sednaoui
Stephane was born in Paris, France 1963. He is an French photographer, director and producer, he works are photojournalism, Fashion photographer, photographic essays and portrait photography. He has been working since 1981 and still currently working. He first and break out music video he directed was for a French rap band in the 1990 then went on to the US to work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This video was called 'Give It Away' in 1991. His work has been celebrated in a DVD called ' The work of director Stephane Sednaoui' which was in 2005. However Stephanes music video work was short lived as he stopped directing them in 2000 to carry on with other art and photo projects. I am looking at some of the music videos he has directed. the following videos I am looking at will be
Bjork - Big time sensuality
U2 - Mysterious ways
Tricky - For Real
By looking at theses three videos its easy to see similar factors they have because of the way Stephane directs. Only thing that comes across all three of these video's is Stephane likes to keep the artist or band be the main focus of the video and have other elements going on around them that aren't that important to the video. for example in the Bjork video its all black and white and she is the main focus with the camera being on a tripod just pointing at her and have extreme close up's of her face. This is also shown in the Tricky video, there is a narrative behind the whole video however the main person in that story is the artist and the camera keeps moving back on him when he is singing. In all three of these videos they are mostly performance based, the artists are all singing in the video rather or not if there is a story going on in the video or if it is just like the Bjork video.
In two of these videos it shows a technique Stephane likes to use, he places mirrors around the set or location and gets most of his shoots from the mirrors to show the artist and their surroundings. This technique is shown in the U2 video, Mysterious ways where we see the artist Bono moving around however we don't see him only his reflection in the mirrors. This also happens when the artist Tricky is checking his tie and suit jacket in the mirror, while he is doing this the audience get to see where he is and what is going on in the background which adds to the narrative of the video.
An other technique Stephane uses in his work is to dissolve and over lap some images. For example this happens a lot in the 'For Real' video where we see the group of men sitting around the table and when the camera is focused on someone the image starts to change of a different movement they were doing but still keeping the outline of there first action there to see the quick movement made. Also it does tell the audience the past they are moving at within that sequence. In the ' Big Time Sensuality' video we do get to see the same dissolve ad over lap of images happen when Bjork is at the back of the truck then having a quick extreme close up of her face but this having her outline from the back of the truck in the shoot.
Its hard to tell if Stephane uses the same colour theme because the first video, Bjork - Big Tim Sensuality, was in black and white. The second video, U2 Mysterious ways, used a lot of sandy colours with yellows, reds and oranges which made it a warmer looking video. The third video, Tricky - For Real, was more drained colours unlike the U2 video which went well with the tone of the song. Stephane links the colour theme to the mood of the song and artists.
These three music videos are all aimed at young adults/middle aged adults. These videos don't show anything that could be taken as offensive so younger people can watch these videos but I think it is aimed at elders just because of the type of music and artists he works with. The subject matter in these videos link to the lyrics and are basic performance base videos. The Bjork video is playful because of the expressions she is doing with her face. These videos are fast past editing not because of how fast the songs are but just so the audience get to see a lot of repetition of the same thing at different angles which takes the video less boring.
My over all view of Stephane Sednaoui's work that its entertaining but people who really want to see their favourite artist will like his work more because it gives you a sense that you are closer to them with the camera only focusing on them and them because the main focus of the videos. One thing Stephance is very successful at is promoting the artists and song because he tries to make sure they are first person/people the audience see. Stephane's work fits in with the tracks he is given and he doesn't totally go away with what the track is saying and come out with this over the top, dramatic director video that no gets. He tries to stay within the lines of the lyrics and replays on the artist to become the video and make it about selling their image within the four or five minutes of the video.

tenacious D music task 2
Analysing of music video
band: Tenacious D
Song: Tribute
Genre: Comedy Rock
This song is from a soundtrack for the film Pick of Density
Tribute is the first single from Tenacious D self titled debut album on July 6th 2002. The music video was directed and edited by Liam Lynch. The band is made of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The bands genre that they mostly perform in is hard rock or comedy rock. The recorded at The boat in silver lake in Los Angeles.
The music video starts of when Jack Black and Kyle Gass at an American mall talking about recording their own music. Jack Black talks Kyle Gass into recording at a 'studio' in this mall which we find out is just a normal kakaroke studio. Due to the start of this video and the end I would say it's narravite works in with the performance that is mostly in this video cause what they are singing about is being played out by them in flash back scenes and cut always. The comedy comes through when you listen to the lyrics also the conversation between the artists at the start. I think if this video wasn't performance and narrative based then it wouldn't work as well with the band because when though it's taken as a normal music video there is also a sense of comdey within how they have pushed in these two grown men in a small studio room and have the cut backs to them in this room to see their reactions to what they are singing about and the power behind the lyrics. Also after the recording when they leave the studio, because of how open it is it does give them freedom after singing the song it self.

Analysing of three music videos
Video 1: Guns N' Roses - Sweet child o' Mine
Genre Characteristic
Rock n' Roll.
Band wearing leather and with longer hair.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
There are little links between the lyrics and visuals because you see images of people in the band with one woman at a time which links to the woman they are all singing about.
What is the relationship between music and visuals?
They link because you hear the drums and the guitar as you see the band play it.
Are there close ups of the artist and star image motifs?
Yes there are lots of close up's of the singer, Axl rose, also lots of close ups of him doing the jumping around on stage that he is famous for. Also you have the guitarist, Slash, see lots of close ups of him like Alx rather than the rest of the band. We see Slash in his famous hot hat and leather clothing doing his guitar solos.
Is there reference to the notion of looking?
There are some notion of looking when the different people in the band are with a woman. For example when Alx looks at the woman then kisses her on the cheek

Risk assessment
A risk assessment form is a table of all different risks that could be there at the location. Its there to reduce the risks to an minimum. For example if a fire could start its a risk and action needs to be taken. For this all to be in one place there are tables that you have to put all the risks in one place.
Location Recce Checklist
Things that you need to make should you have covered and gone over before filming takes place. Things on this list will have to be complied every time you go to a new location.
Things that you will need to take to the location will be:
A camera so you can take photos of the location and go back to show the directer and actors incase the location doesn't look the way they thought it would.
risk assessment forms to make sure you have made a note of all the things that could be harmful to crew while working and make sure you are covered if things go wrong.
A brief so you know what you are going to do and make sure you understand what will be happening on the day.
Notebook and pens to make notes on little details about the location to tell the directer before shooting takes place.
Maps and directions so every member of the crew and cast know where they are going and it saves time.
People you will need to talk to before shooting:
Confirm ownership so if you are filming in a place that someone owns, you got them to sign a form to give you the right for you to film there.
Discuss fees and contracts must be place before filming so that there are no problems when filming does take place and every one in a shot in the film has given there permission to be filmed.
Exchanged details are important because if you are planning to film at an location and something at the location is wrong the owner can then call you to tell you about the problem and that will give you enough time to find somewhere else if possible.
Copyright issues are a big thing that need to be put in place right away. Copyright issues could be linked to music, companies shown in the scene also any logos.
Children's details are important because by law you cant film anymore under 18 unless you have parental permission.
Transport/access:
Risk of trespass needs to be thought about because if you are going to your location and to get there you are going through private land you will need permission to walk through when filming starts.
Internal access could be a problem because if you cant get into the location for example doors locked are you still able to get into the location it self.
Sound:
Listen to hear what the sound is like at the location on a normal day.
If schools are close make a note of it because the sound will change when school is open, finishing and on break times.

A draw up of the location of my 'fish out of water' film idea 'dyingwish'
This lay out and location outside will fit in perfectly with the scene of Frank talking to Sophie, a wife of a man he killed, in the care home and finally coming clean on who he was and what he has done for many years and the number of men he has killed.
The location outside being one big house alone with a forest at the back of the garden areas surrounding the building fits in with the flash backs Frank has about were he has put the graves of many men. .
A lay out of a building and the location outside
This location and set out of a building could fit a horror film with a number of different houses around and windows looking into the house it will be perfect for a killer to never be found.
The lay out of the open planned down stairs and big windows in every room fits in with the killer watching and following his victim.
