What sounds tells you about the characters, area and if it was recorded differently would it have the same effect? Different impact? 

External diegetic sound - everyone can hear like a radio

Internal diegetic sound - someone talking to themselves so only the audience and the character can hear it 

Sitting with the director and main production crew is called spotting. Going through the sound shot by shot and make notes on what you need. 

Lock cut- when the pictures are locked, finished with then everything else eg titles and sound, effects are added in on another timeline
